Rubik’s Cube: Easier Than English?
Zeli “Jeff” Qian is a cubist — as in Rubik’s Cube. The Zhejiang Province native can finish the cube-shaped puzzle in 18.27 seconds, a time that’s listed in the World Cube Association’s record books. Qian brought that same determination to NC State, where he’s studying mechanical engineering. He’s also honing his English speaking, writing and research skills through Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures courses for non-native speakers of English.

Alex Hyler is a senior pre-dental student majoring in Spanish Languages and Literatures. She has interned and volunteered in several dental offices and clinics, including one in Bolivia. She studied abroad in Spain, is a Fall 2014 teaching assistant, and founded the NC State Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fundraiser in 2013-14.
Student Research Translates Into Broader Horizons
Tingting Ji is proficient in four languages: Chinese, French, English, and Italian. So when she saw an email about an undergraduate research award that involved translating, the Foreign Languages and Literatures major leapt at the opportunity.
